How computers work

This Computing video explores the difference between hardware and software, showing that software refers to programs that run on a computer while hardware describes the physical parts of a device.

It explores different types of hardware, including internal components such as the processor and memory, as well as external parts like screens, keyboards and mice.

The video explains how input devices are used to send information to a computer and how output devices display or present the results. It also introduces the concept of peripherals as external devices connected to a computer.

The video demonstrates how all computer systems follow an input–process–output model and shows that this applies not only to computers but also to everyday devices such as traffic lights and washing machines, where software controls how the hardware operates.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing videos, which provide guidance and support to help teachers develop confidence and subject knowledge when delivering the computing curriculum.
