Marking and celebrating growing up through belief

This Religion and worldviews teacher video supports the introduction of coming of age ceremonies by showing how belief, commitment and community shape the transition from childhood to adulthood. The content highlights key examples across traditions: Bar and Bat Mitzvahs in Jewish communities, where young people take responsibility for observing commandments; Upanayana within the Brahmin Hindu community, which marks the beginning of spiritual study with guidance from a guru; and confirmation in some Christian denominations, where young people express a conscious commitment to their faith and church community. Each example illustrates preparation, symbolic actions and personal responsibility, offering clear reference points for classroom discussion.

The video guides teachers in leading learning that builds on earlier work about baby welcoming ceremonies. It models ways to help children explore who makes commitments in these rites, what responsibilities they entail, and why young people choose to participate. Through comparing traditions, teachers support pupils in recognising shared themes of belief, responsibility and celebration, developing an understanding of how worldviews mark significant life stages.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore different beliefs, values and traditions, developing respect and understanding for people of all faiths and worldviews.
