Investigating bridge structures

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to a practical investigation where Key stage 2 pupils test and compare the strength of different bridge structures. It explores how simple beam and arch bridges can be constructed with card and everyday classroom materials, before progressing to more advanced laminated and corrugated designs. The video demonstrates each stage, from setting up fair tests and recording results to experimenting with shapes and reinforcements, encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on exploration of structural strength.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology resources. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to apply scientific principles such as compression and fair testing, while developing their construction skills and creativity through engaging bridge-building experiments in lessons like the ones below.
