Building a toolbox of self-regulation strategies

This RSE & PSHE video helps the children understand what self-regulation is and introduces a range of strategies that can help them manage big feelings. The video explains that everyone experiences strong emotions from time to time and that self-regulation means finding ways to feel calm, safe and settled again when thoughts or feelings become overwhelming. The children are encouraged to notice and name their emotions and think about how intense those feelings are before choosing a strategy that works for them.

The children learn that different self-regulation strategies work for different people and situations. The video explores practical techniques including talking to a trusted adult or friend, deep breathing exercises, movement such as stretching or walking, and sensory approaches like holding a soft object or using a fidget toy. It also introduces calming strategies such as deep pressure from a weighted blanket, coat, pillow or hug. Throughout, the children are reminded that self-regulation is a skill that develops with practice and that building a personal toolbox of strategies can help them manage emotions more confidently.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
