Welcoming babies across worldviews

This Religion and worldviews video supports teachers in delivering a unit that explores the big questions: How and why are we here? and How can worldviews be expressed? Children investigate beliefs and traditions related to baby welcoming ceremonies across Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Humanist worldviews. They explore the symbolism and values behind practices such as Adhan and Aqiqah, Jatakarma, Namakarana, baptism, and Humanist naming ceremonies. The unit encourages children to connect ideas about creation and community with prior learning, while developing conceptual understanding of ceremony, charity, values, and belonging.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews resources – prophets. It equips teachers to approach sensitive topics respectfully, including different beliefs about God, godparents, and family traditions. Teachers are supported to foster inclusive classroom discussions and to address misconceptions, such as the idea that every family has a baby ceremony. The video encourages using simplified and accurate language, storytelling, and visual aids to help children connect personally with the content. Suggestions are given for adapting lessons to reflect local worldviews, and for enriching the unit through guest speakers or community links.
