Progression of Mixing Skills in Primary Cooking

This Design and technology video introduces teachers to the mixing skills that children should develop throughout primary school. It explores how pupils build confidence in different techniques, from basic stirring and mashing in early years to more advanced methods like kneading, rubbing in, and folding in later stages.

The video demonstrates how Reception-age children begin with simple mixing using a fork or spoon, learning to combine ingredients with support. In Key Stage 1, they expand their skills to whisking, kneading dough, and rubbing butter into flour, understanding how these techniques affect texture and structure in recipes. By Key Stage 2, they refine their mixing techniques, focusing on consistency, rough combining, and the delicate process of folding ingredients to prevent overmixing.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Cooking and Nutrition resources. It ensures teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in developing essential mixing techniques in the lessons and units below.
