Exploring painting techniques

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a variety of painting techniques to help pupils explore texture, tone and form, before using them to paint a simple three-dimensional object.

This activity requires ready mix paint in primary colours plus black and white, palettes, brushes, sponges, cotton buds, glue spatulas, water pots, and optional materials like sand, salt, glitter or oats to mix into paint for texture. Watercolour paint and PVA glue can also be used. The focus of this lesson is experimentation, so working in sketchbooks is ideal.

The video demonstrates techniques including dabbing, stippling, pointillism, washes and texturing paint with other materials. Pupils will then apply these methods to paint a simple curved object, using tints and shades to show areas of light and shadow.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Light and dark unit. It encourages pupils to explore, experiment and develop their own creative painting style.
