Teaching children to spot scams and stay safe online
This RSE & PSHE video supports teachers in helping pupils recognise online scams and misleading messages. It explains that scams are designed to trick people into sharing personal information, giving away money or granting access to accounts and highlights how these messages can appear in familiar online spaces such as games, videos, adverts, pop-ups and messaging platforms. The video explores common tactics used by scammers, including promises of rewards, free items or prizes and messages that create a sense of urgency to encourage quick decisions.
The video provides guidance on helping pupils develop critical thinking and safe decision-making skills online. Teachers are encouraged to explore warning signs, question the intent behind messages and reinforce that children always have the option to ignore or decline online requests. The video addresses common misconceptions, such as believing that messages on familiar platforms must be trustworthy or that scams are easy to spot. It also highlights practical safety strategies, including reporting, blocking and unfollowing suspicious accounts, while emphasising the importance of telling a trusted adult if something feels wrong. Throughout, the focus is on helping pupils recognise misleading messages, make safe choices and seek support when needed.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE KS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
