Using computer programs

This Computing video introduces pupils to the idea that computers use programs to know what to do. Children learn that a program is a set of instructions and that programs are sometimes called applications, or apps.

The video explores different types of programs pupils may have seen on phones, tablets or desktop computers. Pupils learn that some programs are used for fun, some help people create things, some support communication and others help people find information and learn.

Children also discover that more than one program can run on a computer at the same time. The video shows that programs are not only found on computers, phones and tablets, but also in everyday machines such as washing machines, where instructions tell the machine what to do.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing videos, which help pupils develop their understanding of computer systems and digital technology. It supports children in recognising how programs help computers and other devices carry out different tasks.
