Eating a balanced and varied diet

This RSE & PSHE video helps the children understand what a varied diet is and why it is important for staying healthy. Through simple examples, the children learn that eating the same food all the time does not give their bodies everything they need, and that a varied diet means eating a range of different foods.

The video introduces key food groups and explains that the children should eat foods from each group in different amounts. The children learn that fruits, vegetables and starchy foods should make up just over a third each of what they eat and that aiming for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day can help them stay healthy. The video also explores protein and dairy foods, including alternatives, and explains that oils and spreads should be eaten in small amounts. It highlights that foods high in sugar, salt and fat should be eaten only sometimes, helping the children understand how to make balanced, healthy choices.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE KS1 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
