Challenging stereotypes with respect and understanding
This RSE & PSHE video supports teachers in introducing the concept of stereotypes and guiding pupils to understand how they can be challenged safely. It explains that stereotypes are ideas about a person or group that suggest everyone with similar characteristics behaves in the same way, and highlights how recognising them can support empathy and critical thinking.
Teachers are guided to help pupils identify where stereotypes can appear, such as in the media and everyday situations, and to understand how these ideas can lead to unfair treatment or discrimination. The video provides practical strategies for responding to stereotypes using respectful language that questions the idea and offers a more accurate perspective without blaming the individual. It also supports teachers in helping pupils recognise that even so-called positive stereotypes can be limiting, and encourages thoughtful behaviour both in person and online. This helps pupils develop fairness, responsibility and respect for others.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE UKS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
