Creating distance
This PSHE video introduces distancing as a key approach for creating a safe space in PSHE. It explains how learning through characters, scenarios and stories can help children explore sensitive topics without feeling pressured to share personal experiences, supporting calm discussion and respectful listening.
The video outlines practical ways to use distancing in lessons. Teachers are guided to introduce a character or scenario linked to the learning, for example through a storybook, puppet show, video clip, or a simple description. Children are encouraged to step into the character’s shoes, think about what they might be feeling or thinking, and offer advice or solutions when a problem arises. The video also suggests drama techniques such as role play, hot seating and freeze frames to deepen understanding and build empathy.
The video highlights how distancing supports skill development. By problem solving for a character, children can practise confidence, decision making and emotional understanding in a manageable way. It also explains how to make gentle links to children’s own lives, such as asking them to think about similar situations without sharing personal details, while being clear that distancing is not about avoiding real issues.
