Using stories and scenarios to support discussion
This RSE & PSHE video introduces the concept of distancing and explains how it can help create a safe and supportive environment for discussing sensitive topics in PSHE. By using characters, stories and scenarios, teachers can encourage children to explore ideas, emotions and challenges without feeling pressured to share personal experiences.
The video provides practical examples of how distancing can be used through storybooks, role play, puppets, videos and discussion activities. It demonstrates how exploring a character’s thoughts, feelings and choices can help children develop empathy, practise problem-solving and consider different perspectives. The video also highlights how distancing can support meaningful discussion while maintaining appropriate boundaries, helping pupils reflect on real-life situations in a way that feels manageable, respectful and emotionally safe.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
