Understanding periods and the menstrual cycle
This RSE & PSHE video helps the children understand what periods are and why they happen during puberty. It explains menstruation in a clear, factual and age-appropriate way, helping them understand that periods are a normal part of growing up for many people.
The children learn about the main parts of the female reproductive system and explore what happens during the menstrual cycle. The video explains how an egg is released each month and how the lining of the womb builds up before leaving the body as a period if pregnancy does not occur. It also explores what periods can be like in real life, including how often they happen, how long they last and the different products that can be used to manage them. Throughout, the children are reassured that everyone’s experience is different and that periods should not stop someone from taking part in everyday activities. They are encouraged to talk to a trusted adult if they have questions or concerns.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE KS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
