Teaching feelings and self-regulation strategies
This RSE & PSHE video supports teachers in introducing children to feelings and developing the early skills they need to recognise, express and regulate their emotions. It explains how the unit helps children understand that everyone experiences different feelings and that feelings are a natural part of everyday life, supporting positive relationships, wellbeing and learning.
The video provides guidance on teaching children to recognise and name feelings, notice how feelings can change and identify clues in their bodies and other people’s facial expressions. It explores simple strategies for managing big feelings, such as taking deep breaths, using words to explain how they feel and asking a trusted adult for help. Teachers are encouraged to reinforce that all feelings are valid while making clear that some behaviours are not appropriate.
