Teaching about families with inclusivity and care
This RSE & PSHE video supports teaching about families in a way that is inclusive, respectful and sensitive to children’s different experiences. It explains that learning about families helps children develop a sense of belonging, understand that families can look different from their own and recognise the importance of care, support and healthy relationships within family life.
The video explores the wide variety of family structures children may encounter, including single-parent, blended, foster, same-sex and extended families. Teachers are encouraged to focus on the qualities that make families supportive, such as love, care, respect and shared responsibilities, rather than who is in the family. Practical guidance is provided on using inclusive language, creating a supportive classroom environment and responding sensitively to discussions that may involve family change, separation, bereavement or other challenging experiences. The video also highlights the importance of safeguarding and helping every child feel valued, represented and included.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
