Teaching children to think critically about online advertising
This RSE & PSHE video supports staff in teaching pupils about online advertising and how it can influence people’s choices. It introduces key vocabulary, including ‘advert’ and ‘influence’ and explains that adverts are carefully designed messages created to persuade, promote or encourage a particular response. The video helps teachers explore the many different forms online advertising can take, from obvious banner adverts and videos to sponsored content, search results and in-game promotions.
The video provides guidance on helping pupils think critically about the messages they encounter online. Teachers are encouraged to explore who an advert is aimed at, what it is promoting and the techniques used to influence behaviour, such as persuasive language, bright colours, special offers, urgency, celebrity endorsements and emotional appeals. The video also highlights common misconceptions, including the idea that adverts only sell products and explains that they can also promote services, ideas, behaviours and awareness campaigns. Throughout, the focus is on developing pupils’ awareness of advertising and helping them become more thoughtful and informed users of online content.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE KS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
