Understanding computational thinking

This video introduces teachers to computational thinking and its role in problem-solving. It explores the four key elements—decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design—and how they help pupils break down problems, recognize trends, remove unnecessary details, and create step-by-step solutions.

Computational thinking is introduced in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 through unplugged activities and coding lessons. By linking these concepts to programming, teachers can help pupils develop strong problem-solving skills.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing – Coding Skills resources. It ensures teachers feel confident in supporting pupils’ understanding of computational thinking.
