Understanding periods and the menstrual cycle

This RSE & PSHE video helps the children understand what a period is and why it happens during puberty. It introduces menstruation in a clear, factual and age-appropriate way, helping them understand that periods are a normal part of growing up for many people.

The video explains the main parts of the female reproductive system and explores what happens during the menstrual cycle. The children learn how an egg is released each month and how the lining of the uterus builds up before leaving the body as a period if pregnancy does not occur. The video also explains what periods can be like in real life, including how often they happen, how long they last and the different products that can be used to manage them.

The video reassures the children that everyone’s experience of periods is different, especially when they first begin, and that changes in timing and flow can be normal. It highlights that periods should not stop someone from taking part in everyday activities and encourages them to talk to a trusted adult if they have any questions or concerns.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE KS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
