Using the batik technique

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces the Batik technique of creating patterns on fabric, which involves using hot melted wax and fabric dye to create patterns on fabric.

Traditionally, the batik technique uses melted wax and fabric dye to create patterns. This video explains an alternative method which uses glue and paint to create an abstract, animal-inspired version of Batik. The instructions explain how to apply the glue, paint the background, select colours from a mood board, and add detail. Finally, pupils soak the fabric and gently rub away the glue to reveal the fabric.

The video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Fabric of nature unit. It helps pupils try out new creative techniques and look to nature for inspiration.
