Painting a still life
This Art and design video supports Year 4 pupils in applying their understanding of tone, tints and shades to create a painted still life. Children are encouraged to draw upon the knowledge and techniques they have developed throughout the unit as they observe and paint a still life composition.
The video guides pupils through the process of closely observing a composition and identifying highlights, shadows and midtones. Children learn how careful observation can help them make decisions about colour, tone and paint application to create the illusion of three-dimensional form.
Pupils are reminded to mix tints and shades using black and white paint and to build their painting gradually, working from the lightest tones through to the darkest. The video also encourages them to consider the techniques and tools they have explored during the unit, selecting those that best suit their artistic intentions.
Throughout the process, children are encouraged to step back and review their work, checking how effectively they have used tone to create depth and form. This helps them refine their observations and make thoughtful artistic decisions as they complete their final painting.
This video supports Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Painting and mixed media: Light and dark unit and helps children bring together their learning about observation, tone and painting techniques to create a finished still life artwork.
