This optional unit goes beyond the basic first aid content covered in the Health protection units and beyond the statutory guidance. It prepares pupils for first aid learning in secondary school by raising awareness of emergency first aid and how to get support in an emergency.

Pupils develop an awareness of first aid responses in situations such as choking, someone being unresponsive but breathing and someone being unresponsive and not breathing, without being expected to perform these techniques independently.
