How do artists do a rough sketch?

This Art and design video introduces Year 4 pupils to the purpose of a rough sketch and explains how artists often use simple drawings to plan their work before beginning a painting. Children learn that a rough sketch is a quick, basic drawing that helps record the main shapes and arrangement of a composition.

The video demonstrates how to create a rough sketch using light pencil marks and a gentle grip. Pupils are encouraged to focus on the size and position of objects in relation to one another, helping them carefully observe their still life composition before painting.

Children also learn that rough sketches are working drawings rather than finished pieces. The video reassures pupils that mistakes are a natural part of the process and shows how artists often redraw lines and make adjustments as they refine their ideas.

This video supports Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Painting and mixed media: Light and dark unit and helps children develop observation, planning and drawing skills as they prepare for a final painted outcome.
