Online content and real life

This RSE & PSHE video introduces teachers to how social media can influence the way children think and feel about themselves and others. It explains how online content is often edited or carefully selected and may not always reflect real life. The video also explores how comparing ourselves to what we see online can affect confidence and wellbeing, while reinforcing that everyone experiences both positive and difficult moments, even if these are not always shared online.

The video explains how the lesson encourages children to think critically about the content they see online, recognise both the benefits and risks of social media, and question whether what they see reflects real life. It also reinforces that many social media platforms have age restrictions and are designed for older users.

This video also highlights the importance of responding sensitively if children share concerns about their appearance, confidence or experiences online, and reminds teachers to follow their school’s safeguarding procedures where appropriate. The video encourages children to question what they see online and speak to a trusted adult if something they see negatively affects their wellbeing.
