Teaching children about targeted advertising and influence

This RSE & PSHE video supports teaching pupils about targeted online advertising and how online activity can influence the content people see. It explains how websites, apps and online services collect information about user behaviour, such as searches, videos watched, links clicked and time spent viewing content. The video introduces the role of algorithms in analysing this information and explains how it can be used to predict interests and personalise adverts.

The video provides guidance on helping pupils think critically about targeted advertising and recognise its influence on decision-making. Teachers are encouraged to explore common misconceptions, including the belief that adverts are random or that everyone sees the same content online. The video also highlights the role of influencers and online personalities, helping pupils understand that popularity, follower counts or verification badges do not guarantee reliability. It explains that influencers may be paid or given products to promote and encourages discussion about how advertising, recommendations and online content can affect choices. Throughout, the focus is on developing informed, critical digital users who understand that, despite targeted advertising, they still have the power to make their own decisions.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE KS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
