Helping children manage thoughts, feelings and behaviour
This RSE & PSHE video explores the importance of self-regulation and how it supports children’s wellbeing, relationships and learning. It explains that self-regulation involves managing thoughts, feelings and actions in different situations, helping children cope with challenges, navigate change and engage successfully in the classroom.
The video introduces a range of practical strategies that can help children develop self-regulation skills. Teachers are encouraged to support children in recognising, naming and validating emotions, while building a richer emotional vocabulary. The video also explores coping strategies such as breathing exercises, mindfulness, movement breaks, quiet spaces, sensory tools and talking to trusted adults. Throughout, it emphasises the importance of helping children discover which strategies work best for them so they can develop confidence, resilience and greater independence in managing their emotions and behaviour.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
