Recognising and pronouncing the letter ‘i’ in Spanish

In this Spanish phonics video, pupils learn to identify and pronounce the Spanish ‘i’ sound, which is similar to the long ‘e’ sound in English. The video explains that, unlike in English, Spanish vowels rarely double and that the ‘i’ sound can also be represented by the letter ‘y’ when it stands alone, as in the word y meaning ‘and’.

Using fun examples such as Javi, Sofia and Christina the video builds familiarity with the ‘i’ sound in names and common words. Pupils are guided through mouth mechanics and encouraged to show their teeth and use a “big cheesy grin” to practise clear pronunciation. Through repeated practice pupils develop early phonics skills and confidence when speaking in Spanish.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and develop their language skills.
