Exploring texture and tone

This Art and Design scheme of work video helps pupils build on their understanding of tone by introducing them to crosshatching and mark making techniques.

Children will explore how lines, marks and patterns can be used not just for decoration, but to show texture and tone in their drawings. They’ll practise using crosshatching to create light and dark areas. By placing lines closer together, pupils can show shadows and darker tones. Spacing them out shows lighter areas where light hits the object. This allows children to represent highlights and shadows more clearly and realistically.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Exploring tone, texture and proportion unit. It supports pupils in improving their shading techniques and visual communication through line and mark making. The video encourages experimentation with a variety of patterns and textures, helping pupils develop more control over their drawing tools and boosting confidence in their observational drawing.
