Creating a repeating pattern

This Art and design scheme of work video guides pupils through a step-by-step paper method for creating a repeating pattern.

Using a paper square, children will divide it into four sections, then create a paper collage inspired by their mood board theme. They’ll experiment with torn or cut shapes, playing with colour and layout to develop a unique composition. Once happy with their design, children add drawn patterns or marks to enhance their work before cutting and rearranging the squares in a specific new order. This simple method shows how a pattern can be transformed and repeated in a way that reconnects cut elements in clever and creative ways.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Fabric of nature unit. It supports pupils in building design skills and gaining insight into how creativity can come into play in professional settings.
