Creating a photomontage

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces photomontages. A photomontage is a creative way to tell a story using real images. In this lesson, children will explore how to combine and arrange photos to form something entirely new.

Pupils start by selecting images they find interesting and experimenting with different layouts in their sketchbooks. They’ll develop their ideas by thinking about what the images represent, how they work together, and why they’ve chosen to place them in that way. It’s an opportunity to make decisions as artists, reflecting on their own work and the message they want to share.

Next, the children choose a department to represent and select a range of product photos. These will be used to build a cityscape. They’ll explore tone, scale and placement, noticing how overlapping and layering can add a sense of depth to their composition. Once they’ve made their creative choices, they’ll fix the pieces in place, completing their photomontage poster.

The video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Photo opportunity unit. It aims to help pupils develop their own artistic voice.
