Pupil video: Four-chord pop songs

Pupil video: Discovering Four-chord pop songs

This Music video introduces children to the idea that many popular songs are built using the same four chords. Through a performance by a professional pop band, pupils discover how a single chord sequence can be used to accompany a wide range of well-known songs, helping them understand one of the key features of pop music.

As the band performs a medley of different songs using the same four chords, children are encouraged to listen carefully for similarities between the pieces and recognise how the chord progression remains constant even when the melody, lyrics and style change. This helps pupils develop their understanding of harmony and the important role chords play in shaping a song.

The video supports children in identifying patterns within music and deepens their awareness of how pop songs are constructed. By observing and listening to professional musicians, pupils gain insight into how chords provide a foundation that supports melodies and creates a cohesive musical structure.

Through discussion and active listening, children begin to appreciate how composers and songwriters use familiar chord sequences to create new and engaging music. The video also helps pupils make connections between the songs they hear every day and the musical concepts they are learning in class.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music curriculum support materials, designed to help teachers develop confidence, subject knowledge and practical strategies when delivering the Four-Chord Pop unit.
