ELG: The Natural World

Children at the expected level of development will:

  • Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
  • Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.

Support and challenge

Adults can use the opportunity to:

  • Share the Resource: Animal habitat images or a suitable non-fiction book about habitats before the lesson to practise key vocabulary.
  • Prompt the children to name animals and describe their features while sorting them. For example, the turtle has flippers and a shell; the giraffe has four legs, a tail and a long neck.
  • Encourage the pupils to expand on land, water or air by describing where the animals might live in more detail. For example, the hedgehog is a land animal; it lives in the woodland under leaves or inside hollow logs.
