Recognising and pronouncing the letters ‘c’/‘z’ in Spanish

In this Spanish phonics video, pupils are introduced to the sounds made by the letters ‘c’ and ‘z’ in Spanish, focusing on how these can produce either the ‘th’ sound, as in think, or a hard ‘k’ sound depending on their position in a word. Pupils explore when and why the letter ‘c’ makes a soft or hard sound based on the following vowel and are introduced to the consistent pronunciation rules of Spanish phonics.

Through mouth mechanics and interactive repetition, pupils practise forming the ‘th’ sound using correct tongue placement and airflow and compare this with the hard ‘k’ sound in words such as cabeza and cocodrilo. The video also explains regional variations, showing how the pronunciation of ‘c’ and ‘z’ differs across Spain and Latin America.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and develop their language skills.
