Teaching rhythmic loops through storytelling

This Music video introduces teachers to strategies for helping pupils create and combine rhythmic loops inspired by the dragon dance story. It explains how short repeated rhythmic patterns can represent different actions, such as the dragon running or chasing the pearl, while demonstrating practical ways to explore rhythm using percussion instruments and body percussion.

The video supports teachers in developing pupils’ rhythmic understanding through a simple step-by-step approach. It shows how children use spoken rhythmic sentences to generate musical ideas before transferring them onto percussion instruments. Teachers are also introduced to layering, where different rhythmic loops are combined to build a more energetic and interesting composition, encouraging careful listening and collaborative performance.

The content also highlights the importance of keeping loops short, simple and easy to repeat so that pupils can perform them confidently as an ensemble. By focusing on steady pulse, repetition and teamwork, teachers gain practical strategies for helping children create effective rhythmic compositions inspired by the dragon dance.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children explore musical concepts, perform with accuracy and creativity and deepen their understanding of how music can be written, shared and performed.
