Teacher video: From rehearsal to performance: creating a pop band

This Music video explains how children develop as musicians throughout Year 6, Four-Chord Pop:Playing in a band unit.

Building on prior learning, they learn to play and sing different parts before performing together as a pop band.

The video follows the children’s journey as they learn ‘Wavin’ Flag’ by K’naan. They begin by developing their vocal skills, learning to sing the melody accurately before adding simple harmonies. Children then learn the bass line and chord sequence, gradually combining different musical parts to create a complete performance.

Throughout the unit, professional musicians model key learning and support children through rehearsal and performance. As their confidence grows, children learn how rhythm can shape the energy of a piece and how different musical parts work together within a band.

The video demonstrates how the unit can be taught using classroom instruments, with opportunities for children to use keyboards or their own instruments where available. Children are encouraged to take on specific roles within their bands while developing the skills needed to keep a steady beat, stay in time with others, listen carefully and maintain their individual parts.

By the end of the unit, children combine voice and instruments to perform together as confident and collaborative musicians, demonstrating their understanding of how musical parts work together in a four-chord pop song.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music curriculum support materials, designed to help teachers develop confidence, subject knowledge and practical strategies when delivering the Four-Chord Pop unit.
