Introducing the 'Every picture tells a story' lessons

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces teachers to ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’ — a set of optional lessons designed to build children’s skills in analysing and evaluating art.

Art is more than making. It helps pupils express themselves, develop curiosity and empathy, and explore new perspectives. But knowing how to teach children to talk about art can feel challenging. These lessons support the ‘analysing and evaluating’ strand of Kapow Primary’s curriculum.

Each lesson introduces an artwork and invites children to look closely, ask big questions and share opinions. Through guided activities, they explore the meaning and message behind the piece, helping them see art as a powerful form of communication. The lessons develop oracy and visual literacy, helping children build confidence in speaking, listening, thinking and responding to others.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and Design scheme of work. It helps teachers deliver purposeful art discussions that inspire curiosity, creativity and critical thinking in the classroom.
