How the Buddha found peace

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It tells the story of Siddhatta Gotama, a prince in ancient India, who lived a life of luxury but became curious about the world outside his palace. When he saw sickness, old age, and suffering, he began asking big questions: Why do people suffer? and Can suffering be overcome?

Siddhatta left royal life and searched for answers. After many experiences, he meditated under a bodhi tree and discovered the Four Noble Truths, that life involves suffering (dukkha), which is caused by craving and attachment. He realised that suffering can be overcome by following the Eightfold Path. This moment of understanding transformed him into the Buddha, meaning the Enlightened One. He taught others how to reach peace and freedom, known as Nirvana, by letting go of craving. When the Buddha died, many believe he reached final Nirvana, escaping the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth called samsara.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, key stage 2, Year 6, Why is there suffering (Part 2), Lesson 2: What can cause suffering?
