Pupil video: The role of the bass line
This Music video explores the important role of the bass line in pop music and demonstrates how rhythm can be used to shape the energy and structure of a song. Through clear musical examples, pupils learn how bass lines do more than simply play notes; they help drive the music forward and support different sections of a pop song.
The video begins by reinforcing the common structure of a pop song (introduction, verse, pre-chorus and chorus). Children are encouraged to consider how each section has a different purpose and how musicians use rhythm to help create contrast between them.
As the bass line is demonstrated, pupils discover how simple, steady rhythms can support the verse, allowing the listener to focus on the lyrics and melody. The video then shows how rhythms can become more active during the pre-chorus to build anticipation before reaching a more energetic and exciting chorus.
Through listening and observation, children explore how changing the rhythm of a bass line can transform the mood and feel of a song while the underlying note pattern remains the same. The video also reinforces the importance of keeping a steady beat, staying in time and listening carefully to other musicians when performing as part of an ensemble.
By modelling a range of rhythmic approaches using a four-chord bass line pattern, the video encourages pupils to experiment with their own musical ideas and develop a deeper understanding of how rhythm contributes to effective pop music performance.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music curriculum support materials, designed to help teachers develop confidence, subject knowledge and practical strategies when delivering the Four-Chord Pop unit.
