This parent and carer information letter supports schools in communicating upcoming Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) learning with families before teaching the non-statutory unit RSE & PSHE, Upper key stage 2, Sex education: How do people become parents and carers?
The letter explains the key learning children will cover, including learning the correct terminology for body parts, developing an understanding of how babies are conceived, grow during pregnancy and are born, and exploring different ways families are formed. It also outlines how the learning links to statutory Relationships Education, Health Education and Science requirements and offers suggestions for supporting conversations at home. It also explains that parents can choose to withdraw their child from this learning as it is non-statutory.
The resource is designed to help schools share information clearly and confidently with families and can be adapted to reflect individual school policies and procedures before distribution.
