Talking about emotions and feelings
This RSE & PSHE video supports teachers in developing children’s understanding of emotions and feelings in a sensitive, inclusive and age-appropriate way. It explains the difference between emotions and feelings, introducing six basic emotions – happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust – as a foundation for building children’s emotional literacy.
The video explores how emotions are automatic reactions, while feelings are how we notice, interpret and describe those emotions. It highlights that children can experience different feelings in response to the same situation and encourages teachers to avoid describing emotions as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, instead using language such as ‘comfortable’ and ‘uncomfortable’. As children progress through primary school, they develop a broader emotional vocabulary and become better able to recognise and express how they feel. It includes practical ways to support children, including modelling appropriate language, using visual prompts and encouraging discussion.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE videos, which support teachers and pupils in developing personal, social and emotional skills and exploring relationships, health and wellbeing.
