Staying safe in the sun
This RSE & PSHE video helps pupils understand how the sun’s ultraviolet, or UV, rays can affect the skin and eyes. It explains that UV rays cannot be seen and can cause damage even when the skin does not feel burnt. Pupils learn that tanning is also a sign that the skin has been affected and that repeated sun damage can increase the risk of health problems later in life.
The video shows pupils how to recognise when UV rays may be strongest by checking forecasts, looking at the UV level and noticing the length of shadows. It introduces practical ways to stay protected, including finding shade, covering the skin with clothing, wearing a brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses and applying suncream carefully and regularly.
