Understanding our brain and managing big feelings

This RSE & PSHE video helps the pupils understand why strong feelings can make it harder to think clearly. It introduces the idea of the brain as a two-storey house, where the upstairs brain helps with thinking, learning and making good choices, and the downstairs brain looks after basic needs and keeps us safe when we feel strong emotions such as fear or anger. The pupils learn that these parts are connected and work best together when they feel calm.

The video helps the pupils understand that when emotions feel too big, it can be harder to stay in control and think clearly. It shares simple ways to help the brain work together again, such as using calming strategies, talking to a trusted adult and sharing feelings. This supports the pupils in developing self-regulation, emotional awareness and strategies to manage strong emotions.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE LKS2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore growth and change and help develop personal, social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of relationships and health education.
