What are algorithms?

This video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help pupils understand and create algorithms in computing lessons. It explores how to define algorithms as step-by-step instructions, explain their importance in problem-solving, and guide pupils in building and debugging simple Scratch programs using sequencing and logical steps.

The video demonstrates each stage, from understanding real-life examples of algorithms like recipes or directions to constructing and testing algorithms in Scratch using block-based coding. Teachers will see how to introduce key concepts such as event triggers, sequencing, and control structures to ensure pupils grasp the fundamentals.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing – Coding Skills resources. It simplifies the process, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in understanding and applying algorithms effectively in lessons like the one below.
