Character composing
This Music video introduces Year 4 pupils to composing motifs to represent different characters and emotions. Pupils explore how short repeated musical patterns can communicate personality through changes in pitch, tempo and dynamics.
Using examples such as angry, excited, lazy and cheerful characters, the lesson demonstrates how musical choices can reflect movement and mood. Children learn that low pitches and loud dynamics can suggest stomping or anger, while leaps, changing pitch and faster tempos can create excitement and energy. Softer dynamics, slower tempos and stepwise movement help represent calmer or slower characters.
The video encourages pupils to experiment creatively with note order, repetition and expressive elements while keeping motifs short and memorable. By composing and performing their own ideas, children begin to understand how composers use musical elements to bring characters and stories to life.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children compose creatively and explore how music can communicate mood, movement and character.
