Progression of Measuring Skills in Primary Cooking

This Design and technology video supports teachers to help pupils develop measuring skills, building accuracy and confidence in following recipes. It explores how children learn to measure ingredients using spoons, jugs, and scales while strengthening their numeracy skills.

The video demonstrates how Reception-age children begin by measuring spoonfuls of dried herbs, practising careful scooping and counting together. In Key Stage 1, they progress to measuring liquids with spoons and understanding simple fractions. In Key Stage 2, they develop independence by using measuring jugs for liquids and digital scales for weighing ingredients. By Key Stage 2, pupils refine their skills with both digital and analogue scales, learning to interpret precise measurements.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Cooking and Nutrition resources. It ensures teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in developing accurate measuring techniques in the lessons and units below.
