Unit overview: Year 3 Health protection
This RSE & PSHE video supports teachers delivering the Year 3 Health protection unit. It outlines how pupils deepen their understanding of preventing illness and injury and learn how to respond when health concerns arise. The unit revisits hygiene and the spread of germs, introduces differences between bacteria and viruses and explores how vaccines help the body build protection.
The video also explains how pupils develop their understanding of sun safety. They learn about the possible long-term effects of UV damage, how to assess when the sun may be most harmful and how to use shade, clothing and suncream effectively. Common misconceptions are addressed carefully, including the ideas that all germs are harmful, antibiotics treat viruses and vaccines cause illness.
Later lessons help pupils practise describing symptoms, match common injuries with basic first aid responses and recognise situations that require urgent help. Pupils learn when and how to call 999, what information an emergency operator may need and how to make a calm, clear call. The overview also highlights the use of fictional characters and scenarios to explore medical emergencies sensitively without placing pressure on pupils to share personal experiences.
