Understanding variables in coding

This video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help pupils understand variables and how they are used in coding. It explores how variables store and change information, how they are introduced in Scratch, and how pupils can apply them to create interactive and dynamic projects.

The video explains variables through a simple analogy, showing how they work like labelled baskets that store values. It demonstrates how pupils first encounter variables in Year 4 using Scratch and later develop their skills in Year 5 when coding with a micro: bit. Teachers will see practical examples of variables in action, such as tracking scores in a game, storing player names, or counting steps in a poll.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing – Coding Skills resources. It simplifies the process, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in using variables to enhance their coding projects.
