Supporting safe discussions about identity

This teacher video supports staff to teach about identity in a safe, sensitive and inclusive way. It explains that identity is who we are and can influence how we see ourselves and connect with others, shaped by factors such as likes, values, culture, relationships and experiences. The video highlights that children’s identities are still developing and may change as they grow, and that this is a normal part of growing up.

The video gives practical guidance for creating a safe space for discussion, including setting clear ground rules around respect, confidentiality and kindness. It reminds teachers that conversations about identity can bring up strong feelings, so it is important to avoid assumptions and not apply false labels. It suggests using tools such as a wonder box so children can share ideas or questions anonymously.

The video also shares strategies to reduce personal exposure, such as using distancing techniques like scenarios, stories, or characters. It encourages the use of inclusive resources that help children notice similarities and celebrate differences, strengthening belonging and challenging bias. Teachers are reminded to consult senior leaders or the safeguarding lead if concerns emerge.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE resources, supporting teachers to facilitate thoughtful, respectful identity discussions within a healthy relationships curriculum.
