Making better wheels

CPD video for teaching wheel and axle mechanisms in DT at KS1
This teacher CPD video provides step-by-step guidance for delivering a practical Kapow Design and Technology lesson on improving wheel and base structures for year 1 and KS1 pupils.   Aimed at developing pupils’ understanding of moving mechanisms, the video provides tips on how to help children adapt a fixed axle design into a moving one, laying the foundation for future toy-making projects.

Strengthening wheels and supporting independent problem-solving
Teachers are shown tips for modelling key improvement techniques such as thickening wheels by layering card, smoothing edges for smoother rotation, and using sticky tack to secure wheels to a turning axle. The lesson also introduces the use of straws as axle holders—encouraging pupils to experiment and refine their designs while applying previous learning about structure and stability.

Functional bases to creative toy designs
After testing and evaluating their updated wheel systems, pupils are prompted to consider how their functional bases could be transformed into pull-along toys. This video not only improves teacher confidence in teaching mechanical systems but also bridges technical learning with imaginative play, setting the stage for the next two lessons focused on toy design and construction.
