Progression of Juicing Skills in Primary Cooking

This Design & technology video guides teachers through the development of juicing techniques and the equipment most children should be able to use by the end of their primary school cooking journey. It explores suitable methods for crushing, juicing, and pressing while emphasising the importance of health and safety in cooking lessons.

The video demonstrates how juicing skills develop progressively throughout primary school. In Reception, children begin by crushing soft fruits with a potato masher, learning to release juices gently without mashing them into a paste. As they move into Key Stage 1, they are introduced to juicing citrus fruits using a manual juicer, applying controlled pressure to extract juice safely. By Key Stage 2, they refine their skills by using a garlic press and learning to extract juice or mince ingredients with greater precision and control. Through guided demonstrations, the video shows how these techniques build confidence and independence in the kitchen.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Cooking and Nutrition resources. It ensures teachers feel confident in introducing safe and engaging juicing techniques in primary cooking lessons in the lessons and units below.
