Teacher video: Composing a motif

This Music lesson video introduces teachers to composing and notating motifs through character creation, helping pupils understand how short repeated musical patterns can represent personality and ideas. Children begin by designing a character, choosing traits, hobbies and a name before creating spoken rhythmic phrases using sentence stems. These phrases form the basis of their motifs, encouraging pupils to make meaningful connections between language, rhythm and melody.

The lesson supports children in experimenting with musical elements such as pitch, tempo and dynamics while developing motifs that reflect their character. Pupils learn to match syllables to notes so that the rhythm of the words aligns accurately with the melody. Through this process, children begin exploring how composers use musical choices to communicate character and mood, while developing confidence in composing short melodic ideas.

Teachers are guided to support pupils in notating their motifs on the stave, encouraging them to focus carefully on one note at a time. Children may first write the letter names beneath the stave before formally recording the pitches, helping to bridge practical music-making with written notation. Pupils then play back their compositions to check accuracy and swap work with partners to practise reading notation and giving feedback to one another.

The lesson also encourages collaborative learning and reflection, as children compare compositions and evaluate how successfully the notation represents the intended musical idea. By revisiting and saving their compositions for later in the unit, pupils build continuity in their learning and develop a deeper understanding of composing, performing and notating music.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children compose creatively, read and write notation, and explore how music can communicate ideas, characters and emotions.
